OutdoorPix- Alta Ghost Town

“Ghost Town.”  Just saying it brings visions of cowboys and gunfights on dusty streets.  The stuff of old movies.

There are hundreds (if not thousands) of ghost towns in the American West.  Dilapidated and broken buildings are a testament to broken dreams and tough people in search of the American Dream.  Discoveries of silver and gold rushes created boom towns almost overnight, only to be abandoned when the mines went bust.

The Alta ghost town is located outside Telluride, Colorado.  We stumbled onto it on unexpectedly on a mountain bike ride.  There were many buildings still standing, and many piles of broken lumber where homes and businesses once stood.  The backdrop of Colorado peaks, dramatic clouds, and wildflowers made it all the more special.
